Our Furry Friends

After thinking about what to blog next, I realized that in my last family post I didn't include the fuzzy members of the family....Oscar and Peanut our chinchillas. So here is the story behind them...

About 2 and a half years ago, Nick, Mikayla and I ventured to the pet store ONLY to get hamster food. Well after looking around at the other animals with Mikayla, I found Oscar. He was in a tiny one level cage where he couldn't jump. He had his face pressed up against the cage and his little eyes followed me everywhere. So I went over to Nick and asked if we could bring him home. Nick said he didn't mind as long as he was kept in his cage and was hopping around the apartment. So we brought him home with a big 3 level cage where he would have lots of room to jump. After talking to the guy at the petstore...turns out that Oscar arrived just 20 min before we did. Perfect timing lol. I decided after we brought him home, I should do some research because I had absolutely no idea how to take care of him. So I found this great website and started to read...life expectancy: 15-20 years!!! I started thinking what did I get myself into...Mikayla will have moved out and I will still have this chinchilla. Well it didn't take long for us all to fall in love with the little guy. Especially Nick...the guy who didnt seem all that excited to get him. Nick has said he'd pick a chinchilla over a cat or a small dog anyday because they do make awesome pets.
Not long after came our girl chinchilla Peanut. We noticed that after going away for weekends Oscar was so happy to see us come home. So I started thinking he need a friend. I found her when she was just a baby at the same pet store Oscar came from. I tried calling Nick and tellin him what I had found, but there was no answer. Knowing she was a baby and a rare colour, I knew she would be bought by someone quick. So I bought her as a friend for Oscar and brought her home. Mikayla wanted to name her peanutbutter jelly sandwich (odd child lol) so we compromised on Peanut. My plan worked and they keep eachother great company when we go out. Oscar is a lot happier now with a little friend. And we love having them around. Oscar is more attached to me, where Peanut loves Nick. Turns out they are like birds and choose mates of the opposite sex. So although we will have these guys for almost 20 years, I do not regret them one bit! They make great pets and are very affectionate.

They both have little personalities. Oscar is the funny one. He has parrot toys in his cage, so he rings his bell for your attention. I'll go over, rub his belly and then the second i sit down he starts ringing it again. He does the same when Nick and I go to bed. He doesnt like Mikayla too much though. She can bug him quite abit...once Oscar got out(dont know how) and peed on Mikaylas bed. We walked in just as he was jumping back in his cage. And Peanut...shes a bit of a spaz. She swings in her hammock and does weird things. But she only really shows affection towards Nick. I can only hold her for a bit before she jumps for Nick lol. Oh and they both love watching tv lol. They do have quite the personalities.

But let me tell you Oscar HATES me. We chinchilla sat last summer and Oscar would hiss at me. I fed, watered and would sit and talk to him but he just didn't like me. John came in to help me one day with him and he was out running around the bedroom and John and I were sitting on the bed and he jumped up on the bed and hissed then jumped back down....I'm sorry Lisa they creep me out....

Nick teases me because I'm afraid of a little furry chinchilla.

From what I have heard, 1 plus 1 doesn't make 2. Good luck on the chinchilla farm!!!!
